Most believe that martial arts is purely external power – the power which comes from your laborious training and strengthening of specific muscles. For a beginning martial artist, this may be true, but real martial arts power comes within you. Discipline, focus, determination, and countless more characteristics are all internal powers that a martial artist must have to excel within his or her studies. Once he or she has learned these internal powers, a martial artist can then truly appreciate all that the arts can offer.

Internal martial art powers can be characterized by “grace, compassion, dignity, respect, honor, internal energy, aspirations towars evolved thinking, and (the) mastery of the mind and breath”. In martial arts teachings, the power of the mind is strongly emphasized over physical strength. Martial arts will teach those who dedicate themselves to its studies, how to discipline their minds in addition to their bodies. A martial artist must have a disciplined mind in order to gain motivation to achive his or her fullest potential.

Compassionate martial artists always aspire to be taught new things, whether it be a new technique, an unknown style of martial arts, or even a more challenging weapon. Once a martial artist has reached a higher level, then that individual can decide whether or not to become a leader. The real power that exists within a leader is the power to chosse peace over conflict. It is important for a martial artist to take the path of selflessness and always try and do the right thing. When he or she can finally lead by example, then that individual has gained the fundamental internal strengths. These achived internal powers can always be applied to real life situations.

Whether it may or may not be studying martial arts, these characteristics work well for anything one may want to achieve a goal in life. These powers will continue to be significant in an individual’s training of phychological skills and will certainly influence training of physical skills. Once the mind has been disciplined, an individual’s physical strength can excel. The characteristics, such as determination, commintment, and focus will help an aspiring martial artist work towards a healthy and a physically powerful body by strengthen skills, endurance, and flexibility.

All forms of martial arts are unquestionably exhausting on one’s body so in order to keep up the motivation, one must have developed self-motivation, which is undoubtedly a tough thing to do. Strength and control are key to learning any form of martial arts or martial arts weaponary. It takes an enormous amount of concentration as well of strength to do katas or fight. Each form of martial arts focuses on different muscles, due to different strikes and techniques, and requires elevated level of cardio.

With both internal and external powers, a martial artist can achieve his or her fullest potencial. First, the internal powers within the individuals must be present before perfecting the external powers of martial arts. The internal power one should discover are the powers of the mind, which include discipline, motivation, righteousness, focus, and selflessness. After, a martial artist can use these powers to futher their studies in order to strengthen their physical and external powers. Within their external power, a martial artist can become faster and more acurate with his or her techniques and skills. Internal and external powers works hand in hand studying martial arts. Not until a martial artist has both can he or she truly appreciated all martial arts can offer in life.
